This week we did the other part of the workshop introduced in the previous post: we needed to look at other people images and see what worked for them and pick one we found intriguing and say why and how they can improve.
The picture chosen from my project was from Project B and the feedback given was, with no offence, not quite helpful as it was given for the Minor project. This is my fault as my postcards where not fully labelled between the two and I did make the table quite full of my postcards to make a distinction.
Then we did create two pile of 10 postcards, one of the ones we think are successful, the other with unsuccessful ones. In this I saw that many successful ones where from Minor and unsuccessful was for Project B, which I believe it makes sense: the idea behind Project B was not a good one and was not following my instincts.
Successful ones:
B25
Good usage of gut feeling, emotional usage of colours, technique is clearly lacking as it is only a sketch, it is also aesthetically pleasing to me.
B15
The colours let me see which direction my eyes land on which is the exact thing I wanted to happen, it also made me happy to look at.
B18
This one is successful because I can remember which movie inspired it: Atlantis by Disney, the crystal scene to be precise. I also like the colours used.
B13
I believe this is successful due to the layering in the picture: the black pen was the first, then white posca pen, then the cyan pen and finally another layer of Posca white pen layer. It made the feeling of mystery that I wanted to come through.
M12
This is when I realized that my work revolves a lot around Violet, the protagonist, and not so much on the antagonists, this is the ‘first’ picture of the queen of the Nightross I made.
M18
Eyes are the things that I am more indecisive about giving my protagonist, but this is a good start of branching out.
M3
This is good as it is world building illustration, which I do not have many, but I believe the simplicity of lines and shading makes the dread of the ‘all the same’ wash onto the viewer.
M13
This is good for the same reasoning above, it is linked to world building, and the anxiety Violet is under as anyone can reveal her secret. The red shapes are supposed to be eyes but in class not everyone saw them as such.
M15
Violet has another ‘form’, which is pure purple energy in a humanoid shape, I had problem conceptualizing her with colours until now.
M8
I believe this is a good representation in simple terms of what happens in the city, maybe it can be used as an emblem.
The Bad:
B14:
This is the one I pointed out in class, it is bad because it does not feel right, the colours are awful, the shapes are not too sloppy, and composition wise it is horrid.
B11:
This is similar on why it is awful for B14: it is overwhelming the colours are too bright and blinding, and the desert looks like red water.
B3:
This is the contrary of B13, the layering did not work well enough to make it appear as intended, the eye does not focus on the creation of whatever the figure is doing.
B24:
Same problem with B14 and B11, the colours are awful to look at.
M11
Just a pair of outdated concepts for Violet’s glasses, nothing really interesting, nor well crafted.
M6
The presentation of the three Imperial scene inside my head: it looks too much like the three golden goddesses form The Legend of Zelda as presented in the explanation in Ocarina of Time, so no good, and orange is with a felt ben while the other two had been done with a normal coloured pen.
M21
Colours do not match what I wanted to create, mix media not working well together.
M20
It has nothing to do with the project and it does not look like a tree
M5
Just a horrible car drawing.
Just some images created on building on the good postcards, these are just experimental.

Problem:
The biggest problem this week faced was the CTS3 deadline for the draft dissertation. This made everything harder, and I just created stuff to wind down. This brought forth other problems such as been a week late on the project. Week 6 will have the work for both this week and next week progress.
